What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with aligning the teeth and correcting bite problems, contributing both to the look of the smile and to the proper working of the jaws and teeth.

The orthodontist diagnoses, prevents and treats problems such as crowded teeth, gaps between teeth, crossbite, deep bite or open bite, and certain problems in the development of the jaws.

At what age is the first orthodontic consultation recommended?

The first orthodontic consultation is recommended at around 6–7 years of age, when the dentist can identify early any problems with tooth alignment or jaw development.

This does not mean treatment has to start straight away. The orthodontist decides the right moment to intervene, according to the child's development and the particulars of each case.

Is there an age limit for orthodontic treatment?

No. Orthodontic treatment can also be carried out in adulthood, as long as the condition of the teeth, the gums and the supporting bone allows it.

Fixed braces and clear aligners are chosen according to each patient's needs.

In certain situations, orthodontic treatment may also be needed before prosthetic work, to reposition teeth or to create the space required.

Fixed or removable braces?

During the growth period, the orthodontist may recommend a removable or a fixed appliance, depending on the dental problem and the child's development.

Fixed braces are often used once the permanent teeth have come through, but they may also be recommended earlier, in certain situations.

The choice of appliance and the moment treatment starts are decided after the orthodontic consultation.

Types of orthodontic appliances

  • Removable dental appliances;
  • Fixed braces with metal, ceramic or sapphire brackets;
  • Spark and ClearCorrect clear aligners.

What discomfort can appear during treatment?

  • In the first days after the brace is fitted, a feeling of pressure or sensitivity in the teeth may appear.
  • Fixed braces can sometimes irritate the cheeks or lips. Orthodontic wax can help reduce the discomfort.
  • After the brace is adjusted, temporary sensitivity may appear, which usually eases within a few days.

If the pain is intense or persists, or significant sores appear, you should contact your orthodontist.

Oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day and, with fixed braces, clean them after meals as well, as your dentist recommends.
  • Use interdental brushes and dental floss to clean the hard-to-reach areas.
  • If you wear fixed braces, avoid very hard or sticky foods, such as toffee, popcorn and hard nuts, which can damage the brace.
  • Cut hard foods, such as raw fruit and vegetables, into small pieces, to avoid brackets coming loose.

Regular check-ups are essential for checking the progress of treatment and adjusting the brace. How often you come is decided by the orthodontist, according to the type of appliance and the treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions

How long does treatment with braces take
How long orthodontic treatment takes depends on how complex the case is, the position of the teeth and the type of appliance used. In general, treatment can last between 12 and 24 months, sometimes longer, depending on how crowded the teeth are, the gaps between them, the changes needed to correct the bite or other dento-maxillary anomalies. The orthodontist sets the estimated length of treatment after the consultation and the necessary X-rays.
What do braces cost at Hevadent
The cost of orthodontic treatment depends on the type of appliance chosen and the specifics of each case. Removable appliance: from 1,600 lei per arch. Removable bimaxillary activator appliance: 1,800 lei. Fixed braces with metal brackets: 2,700 lei per arch. Fixed braces with ceramic or sapphire brackets: 3,500 lei per arch. Self-ligating ceramic braces with a metal clip: 5,000 lei. Spark clear aligners: from 5,000 lei per arch. Regular check-ups are needed during orthodontic treatment to monitor progress. For removable and fixed appliances, the monthly adjustments cost between 100 and 250 lei, depending on the type of appliance and the number of arches treated. For clear aligners, check-ups are not charged separately. The orthodontist recommends the right type of appliance after the consultation and the necessary X-rays. For the full, up-to-date price list, see the Prices section of the Hevadent website.
Can I wear braces at 30 or at 40
Yes. Bone remodels at any age, so teeth can be moved in an adult too. What changes is the preparation: in an adult the state of the gums, teeth already treated or missing and existing prosthetic work all have to be taken into account before an appliance goes on. Age in itself is not a contraindication.
Will the braces be visible
That depends which version you choose. Metal brackets show, ceramic and sapphire ones match the colour of the tooth and are less noticeable, and Spark aligners are clear trays. Each version carries its own price in the clinic's list, and the difference in appearance is reflected in what it costs.
Will I have to have teeth taken out for braces
Not always. Extraction comes into consideration when there is no room along the arch for every tooth, but there are other ways of creating space, such as widening the arch with an expander or minimally reshaping the contact points between teeth. The decision rests on the imaging and the study model, not on a first glance.
What do I do if a bracket comes off or the wire slips out
Ring the clinic and say what has happened, so you know how quickly it needs looking at. Until then, if the end of a wire is digging into your cheek, orthodontic wax will cover it. The price list has a row for replacing a bracket or an archwire, 100 lei per item.
I am afraid of the dentist. What can I do
Orthodontics involves, for the most part, work without a drill: the brackets are bonded to the enamel surface, without cutting the tooth to fit them. If the length of it or the idea of wearing something visible for months worries you, ask at the consultation how long it would take in your case and what discreet versions exist, so the decision rests on figures rather than guesswork.
What is the difference between a removable and a fixed appliance
A removable appliance comes out of the mouth and works mainly on the width of the arch and on habits, which is why it is used during growth. A fixed appliance is bonded to the teeth and can move each tooth in a controlled way, in every direction, so it can solve situations a removable one cannot reach. Their prices differ in the list for exactly that reason.
What is retention and how long does it last
Retention is the stage after the appliance comes off, in which the teeth are held in their new position by a bonded retainer, a tray or a Hawley plate. Without it, the teeth can drift back. How long it lasts is set by the orthodontist and is, as a rule, a long time: retention is not a formality of a few weeks.
Can I start braces if I have decay or inflamed gums
Not before they are treated. A fixed appliance makes cleaning harder, so untreated decay or an inflamed gum can get worse underneath it. Decay is treated and the teeth cleaned first, under general dentistry and prevention, and the appliance is fitted once the mouth is healthy.
