General dentistry is a field of dental medicine concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral conditions, as well as with complete and complex oral rehabilitation.

In practice, complete and complex oral rehabilitation aims first of all at drawing up a treatment plan meant to restore the lost functions of the dento-maxillary apparatus (chewing and appearance in particular), and aims to keep the results of the treatment over the long term.

The first stage is a professional cleaning of the mouth, followed by saving what remains of damaged teeth and extracting those judged beyond saving.

Next comes the treatment of simple and complicated decay, followed by surgical procedures (extractions, endodontic surgery, periodontal surgery, implantology, where needed). An orthodontic stage can also be included if necessary. Last comes the prosthetic stage, which also marks the end of treatment. In practice, a rehabilitation of this kind can stretch over several months.

The treatment plan is individual, with the aim of keeping the results over a long period.

Complex oral rehabilitation calls for clinical experience, solid theoretical and practical knowledge, and good collaboration between dentists of different specialties.

Frequently asked questions

What does a filling cost at Hevadent
A permanent composite filling costs 300 lei for shallow decay, 325 lei for deep decay and 350 lei for front teeth. A crown build-up with a post, needed in certain situations where the tooth is badly damaged, costs 350 lei. The initial consultation, in which the dentist assesses the state of your teeth and sets the treatment plan, costs 100 lei.
How long does treating a cavity take
A cavity without complications can usually be treated in a single appointment, in which the dentist removes the affected tissue and restores the shape and function of the tooth with a filling. If several teeth need treatment, several appointments may be needed. The number of appointments is set by the dentist after the consultation, according to how complex the treatment is.
Can I wait if it does not hurt
No pain does not mean the tooth is healthy. Decay can progress without symptoms, and pain may appear only once the damage to the tooth is already advanced. Caught in time, decay can be treated with simpler, less invasive methods. Putting treatment off, on the other hand, can lead to complications and to the need for more complex procedures, such as root canal treatment or rebuilding the tooth.
Does a filling have to be replaced over time
A dental filling does not last forever. Over time, the material can wear, and leakage or secondary decay can appear at the margins of the filling. How long a filling lasts depends on its size, the material used, oral hygiene and habits such as teeth grinding. At regular dental check-ups, the dentist checks the state of existing fillings and decides whether they need repairing or replacing.
What is a temporary dressing and why is it needed
A temporary dressing is a temporary filling, used to protect the tooth between the stages of a dental treatment. It helps keep food debris and bacteria out of the cavity, and can be used when treatment needs several appointments or when the dentist is watching how the tooth develops before placing the permanent filling. How long the temporary dressing stays in is set by the dentist, according to the material used and the specifics of the treatment. A temporary dressing costs 175 lei, according to the clinic's price list.
I am afraid of the dentist. What can I do
Fear of dental treatment is common and can have different causes, such as fear of pain, of the anaesthetic or of the noise of the instruments. It is important to tell your dentist what worries you. That way, they can explain the stages of the treatment and adapt their approach to reduce discomfort and anxiety. Regular dental check-ups also make it possible to find dental problems at an early stage, when treatment is usually simpler and less invasive. Do not wait for pain before booking a consultation.
Can a filling be done while I am pregnant
Yes. Tooth decay can be treated during pregnancy too, and putting off treatment for a dental infection can lead to complications. It is important to tell your dentist that you are pregnant and how many weeks along you are. That way, they can adapt the treatment, the anaesthetic and the medication to your situation. When needed, dental X-rays can also be taken during pregnancy, following radiation protection measures. Oral hygiene and regular check-ups matter especially in this period, because hormonal changes can encourage gum inflammation and bleeding.
What are the additional procedures added to a treatment
Some dental treatments may need additional procedures or materials, depending on how complex the case is. Applying MTA, a biocompatible material used in certain endodontic procedures, costs 150 lei. Endodontic retreatment means redoing a root canal treatment carried out earlier, and may involve an additional cost of 125 lei, added to the endodontic procedures needed. Using the dental microscope gives a magnified view of the detail and allows procedures to be carried out with greater precision. The additional cost is 150 lei per session, according to the clinic's prices. Ask your dentist why these procedures are needed and what they cost before the treatment is carried out. The prices of endodontic treatment and of additional procedures can be found in the Prices section of the Hevadent website.
How often should I come for a check-up
In general, dental check-ups are recommended at intervals of about six months. Even so, how often you need them can vary with the state of your oral health, your risk of decay, the health of your gums and your individual circumstances. People at higher risk of decay or gum disease may need more frequent check-ups. Your dentist sets the right interval after assessing the state of your oral health.
