What is prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with restoring damaged teeth and replacing missing ones, to bring back both the look of the smile and the function of the teeth.

Prosthetic treatment includes dental crowns, bridges, dentures and veneers, as well as work carried out on dental implants. Depending on the clinical situation, these can be fixed or removable.

At Hevadent, the dentist recommends the solutions that suit you after the consultation, taking into account your oral health, your needs and your expectations.

Types of restorations and prosthetic solutions

There are several ways of restoring damaged teeth or replacing missing ones. The choice of treatment depends on the particulars of each patient.

  • Dental crowns: cover and protect damaged teeth, restoring their shape, strength and appearance. They can also be made on dental implants.
  • Dental bridges: replace one or more missing teeth, supported by the neighbouring teeth or by dental implants.
  • Dentures: replace several missing teeth or a whole set. They can be partial or full, removable or fixed on implants, depending on the solution chosen.
  • Dental veneers: thin restorations applied to the visible surface of the teeth, to improve their shape, colour or appearance.
  • Prosthetic work on implants: replaces missing teeth with crowns, bridges or dentures supported by dental implants.

The most common types of dental crown

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns;
  • Full zirconia crowns;
  • Zirconia crowns layered with ceramic;
  • All-ceramic crowns, including E.max.

The choice of crown depends on the position of the tooth, the particulars of the case, the aesthetic requirements and the dentist's recommendation.

At Hevadent, we use digital technology, such as 3D scanning, 3D printing and CAD/CAM systems, to plan and make prosthetic work.

Frequently asked questions

What does a dental crown cost at Hevadent
The price of a dental crown depends on the material used. Milled or printed acrylic crowns cost 400 lei, chrome-nickel metal crowns 500 lei, and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns between 800 and 900 lei. Zirconia crowns start at 1,200 lei, the Ivoclar Prime version costs 1,250 lei, zirconia with layered ceramic 1,500 lei, and E.MAX ceramic crowns 1,700 lei. Cementation costs 75 lei.
How long until I get the final restoration
How long a prosthetic restoration takes depends on its type, the number of teeth involved, the complexity of the case and any treatment or procedures needed before the final restoration is made. In the meantime, you can have a removable temporary restoration, costing between 300 and 600 lei depending on the type of work and the number of units, or a fixed acrylic temporary restoration, at 400 lei per unit. The estimated timeframe for completing the final restoration is set after the consultation and an assessment of each patient's needs.
Does preparing the tooth for a crown hurt
Preparing a tooth for a dental crown is done, when needed, under local anaesthetic, depending on whether the tooth is alive and on the specifics of the procedure. After the procedure, temporary sensitivity can appear, especially to hot or cold. If the sensitivity persists or gets worse, let your dentist know.
Does the nerve have to come out every time a crown is fitted
No. A vital tooth, with enough tooth structure and a healthy pulp, can take a crown without root canal treatment. Keeping the tooth vital is preferable when the clinical situation allows it. Root canal treatment is done only when there is a medical indication, established after a clinical examination and the necessary X-rays.
What happens if I do not replace a missing tooth
The neighbouring teeth can gradually tip towards the empty space, and the tooth on the opposing arch can drift towards it, because it no longer meets its opposing tooth. Over time, these changes can affect the bite and make later treatment more complicated and more expensive. The bone in the area of the missing tooth can also shrink gradually.
How do you look after a dental crown or bridge
Care means brushing twice a day and cleaning between the teeth every day, using floss, interdental brushes and, as a complement, a water flosser, with particular attention to the areas between the restoration and the gum. With dental bridges, it is also important to clean the spaces beneath the restoration properly, using cleaning aids suited to it. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleaning come on top of that.
Can work be done if my gums are inflamed
Not before the gum is treated. A record of the shape of a tooth taken on an inflamed gum does not reproduce the margin of the tooth correctly, and work made from it can have an imprecise edge. On top of that, the gum can recede once the inflammation settles, which can expose the margin of work already fitted. The gum is treated first, under periodontics.
What is a metal-framework denture and why does it cost more
A metal-framework denture is a removable prosthetic restoration for patients who still have natural teeth on the arch. Thanks to its thin, strong metal structure, it is less bulky and can cover a smaller area of the roof of the mouth. The special clasping systems on the remaining teeth can give better stability than conventional acrylic dentures. At Hevadent, a metal-framework denture costs 5,500 lei, compared with 3,000 lei for a milled complete denture. The price difference reflects the complexity of making it.
I am afraid of the dentist. What can I do
It is natural to feel nervous before prosthetic treatment. Talk to the dentist about what worries you. Ask them to explain the stages of the treatment and the options available. While the prosthetic restoration is being made, when indicated, you can have a temporary restoration, which can keep your appearance and function until the treatment is finished.
Can I choose the colour of my dental restoration
Yes, the colour of the restoration is chosen together with the dentist, by comparison with your natural teeth, using a shade guide. Depending on the material chosen, the restoration can be customised to reproduce the shades and natural translucency of the teeth as faithfully as possible. The colour is chosen before the final restoration is made.
