What is preventive dentistry?
Prevention is the first and one of the most important stages of caring for your teeth. It aims to prevent dental conditions, detect them early and keep a healthy, attractive smile.
Prevention and regular dental check-ups help detect dental problems early, reducing the risk of complex treatment, the costs that come with it and the patient's discomfort.
Food debris left on and between the teeth encourages plaque to build up. Over time, plaque can mineralise and form tartar. The build-up of plaque contributes to tooth decay and gum disease, which at advanced stages can lead to losing teeth.
Prevention means, first of all, daily cleaning of the teeth, supplemented and completed by professional cleaning at intervals set according to each patient's needs.
Personal prevention
Brushing regularly, at least twice a day, using additional cleaning aids (interdental brushes, floss, a water flosser) and eating a healthy diet with little sugar.
Professional prevention
The dental check-up, professional polishing and scaling, carried out with conventional methods or with the GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) protocol.
How often you have a professional cleaning is set by the dentist, according to your oral health and risk factors, usually every 6 months.
Toothpaste
Toothpastes contain ingredients that help clean and protect the teeth. Fluoride is one of the most important, helping to strengthen enamel and prevent tooth decay.
There are toothpastes with formulas adapted to different needs, such as sensitive teeth, gum health or preventing plaque build-up.
Whatever toothpaste you choose, remember that correct brushing, in technique, duration and frequency, is essential for keeping your mouth healthy.
Dental floss
Dental floss is recommended for cleaning the spaces between the teeth, where an ordinary toothbrush cannot reach effectively.
Daily use of floss, or another suitable interdental cleaning aid, is recommended to remove plaque and reduce the risk of decay between the teeth and of gum inflammation.
Mouthwash
Mouthwash is a complement to oral hygiene. Depending on its composition, it can help reduce plaque, control gum inflammation or prevent tooth decay.
Mouthwash does not replace brushing and cleaning between the teeth. The product should be chosen according to individual needs and, where necessary, on your dentist's recommendation.
Interdental brushes
Interdental brushes are recommended for cleaning the spaces between the teeth and are especially useful for patients with prosthetic work, dental implants, fixed braces or gum problems.
They come in different sizes and reach areas an ordinary toothbrush cannot. The right size is chosen according to the spaces between your teeth, on your dentist's recommendation.
Electric toothbrushes
An electric toothbrush can make it easier to remove plaque, but how well it works also depends on using it correctly.
It is important to follow the rules of brushing, clean every surface of the teeth and avoid pressing too hard.
The brush head should be replaced roughly every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles show signs of wear.
Manual toothbrushes
A toothbrush should be chosen to suit each patient, so that it cleans effectively without injuring the gums.
Medium or soft bristles are generally recommended, with gentle brushing movements and no excessive pressure.
We recommend changing your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are worn. A damaged toothbrush can no longer clean the teeth effectively.
Water flossers
A water flosser is a cleaning device that sends out a jet of water at adjustable pressure, to clean hard-to-reach areas.
It can be especially useful for people who wear braces, prosthetic work or dental implants.
A water flosser helps remove food debris and can help reduce gum inflammation, but it does not replace brushing and the mechanical cleaning of the spaces between the teeth.
Professional dental cleaning
Without proper oral hygiene, plaque builds up on the surface of the teeth and can mineralise, forming tartar.
Tartar deposits encourage bacteria to accumulate and gum inflammation to develop, contributing to gum disease.
Professional cleaning involves removing plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth and, where necessary, from below the gum line.
The procedure may include scaling, professional polishing and other cleaning methods, adapted to each patient's needs.
Daily brushing is essential, but even when done correctly and regularly it cannot remove tartar that has already formed. That is why professional cleaning completes your care at home.
Done regularly, it helps prevent gum disease and keep your mouth healthy.
How often is professional cleaning recommended?
At Hevadent, we recommend professional cleanings at intervals adapted to each patient's oral health and risk factors.
As a rule:
- Once a year: for patients without prosthetic work, dental implants or gum or periodontal disease, who have good oral health and a low risk of dental problems;
- Twice a year: for patients with prosthetic work or dental implants, depending on the particulars of each case;
- Every 3 months: for patients with periodontal disease, who need more frequent monitoring and professional care.
Prevention matters, because keeping your mouth healthy starts with daily care and continues with regular check-ups and professional cleanings.
